A New Kind of Church Leader Must Rise Among Us
Finishing up “Pagan Christianity?: Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices” by Frank Viola and George Barna. It’s been a really intriguing book. I’ll post my review in the next week or so after I’ve finished all of it.
I was struck with a quote this morning from A. W. Tozer, the 20th century American minister and author, that I wanted to share. How many of us would either be afraid to make such a statement (especially if our way of life, or livelihood is dependent on such things), or would say it with a cynical spirit? I believe Tozer says it out of a love for his Savior and the Church:
“If Christianity is to receive a rejuvenation it must be by other means than any now being used. If the church in the second half of (the twentieth) century is to recover from the injuries she suffered in the first half, there must appear a new type of preacher. The proper, ruler-of-the-synagogue type will never do. Neither will the priestly type of man who carries out his duties, takes his pay and asks no questions, nor the smooth-talking pastoral type who knows how to make the Christian religion acceptable to everyone. All these have been tried and found wanting. Another kind of of religious leader must arise among us. He must be of the old prophet type, a man who has seen visions of God and has heard a voice from the Throne. When he comes (and I pray God there will not be one but many) he will stand in flat contradiction to everything our smirking, smooth civilization holds dear. He will contradict, denounce and protest in the name of God and will earn the hatred and opposition of a large segment of Christendom.” - A. W. Tozer

What Are Thin Places?
"Thin Places" are rich in Celtic tradition. They are the places in our lives where the divine and the natural worlds come so close together that we can catch a glimpse of God. For the Celtics these places were very real - places within creation where we could physically go. The Thin Places in our own lives are those moments where the space between us & the Kingdom is thin, when we are introduced to a greater glimpse of Who He is through our experiences and through the stories of others.
