The Things You Miss

We’re smack dab in the middle of our whirlwind trip back to the Midwest. I’m typing this on the deck at my sister’s in Tulsa where we’ve spent the last few days hanging out. I grew up in Oklahoma and Kansas. It’s where almost all of our family lives, where we are most familiar and where we call ‘home.’
This trip marks the first time I have been back in 2 1/2 years. Halfway through, my list of things that I miss about this part of the country is growing steadily. Here’s the things that I realize that I miss so far…
- The wind. Honestly, I doubt it’s really that much windier here, but because of the level landscape and the lower-growing trees, it means that on most days you have a steady breeze blowing. I love the cool wind and the rustle of the trees.
- Braums. For those of you who don’t know, Braums is a local ice cream shop/restaurant that is fed from a dairy in Tuttle, OK. They only open stores within 300 miles of the dairy in order to keep the milk, etc. fresh. Must have: Braum’s limeades.
- Sunsets/skies. Andrea commented to someone that she never utters the words, “What a beautiful sunset” hardly ever any more. We just don’t get to see them where we live. The terrain is too hilly, and the trees grow too tall to be able to see them. The closer we got to Oklahoma, the more sky we were able to see. I love the wide expanse, being able to see a storm blow in and through, and watching the sunset as it eeks out the last drops of sunlight.
- Family. Hands down the best part of the journey so far. I love hanging out, playing cards, and talking about life. I love hearing the laughter of our kids playing with their cousins. Family is the heartbeat of who we are and being able to spend so much rich time with them has been an incredible blessing.

What Are Thin Places?
"Thin Places" are rich in Celtic tradition. They are the places in our lives where the divine and the natural worlds come so close together that we can catch a glimpse of God. For the Celtics these places were very real - places within creation where we could physically go. The Thin Places in our own lives are those moments where the space between us & the Kingdom is thin, when we are introduced to a greater glimpse of Who He is through our experiences and through the stories of others.
