‘Great’ vs ‘Normal’ People

Excited about the Chick-fil-A Leadercast that GiANT is putting on in a little less than two weeks now. We sold out of the Atlanta live site last week, and have somewhere around 430 locations nationwide carrying the simulcast event.
As I did last year, I’ll have the opportunity to spend some time with one of my favorite authors, and GiANT thought leader, Dr. Henry Cloud. I can’t wait!
The more I’m at GiANT, the more opportunities I have to ‘rub shoulders’ with people I have looked up to as ‘great’ people. What I’ve found is that many of them are rather ‘normal.’ They are just regular men and women with something to share. Some prove to be as great as I considered them to be (case in point Dr. Cloud), but overall I’ve realized that ‘great’ is a fairly objective term when it comes to people.
We like to idolize people. Heck, it’s so much a part of our traditions as Americans that we created a show designed around taking normal people and lofting them into greatness in our eyes.
The truth is that many people we consider to be ‘great’ are simply normal, and many people we consider to be ‘normal’ are really great.
I have encountered people in my life that I’ve counted it as a blessing to get to know at a greater level because they proved to be ‘great’ once you tore past the surface.
Who is ‘great’ in your eyes who perhaps shouldn’t be? What ‘great’ people in your life would others consider to merely be ‘normal’ when looking in from the outside?

What Are Thin Places?
"Thin Places" are rich in Celtic tradition. They are the places in our lives where the divine and the natural worlds come so close together that we can catch a glimpse of God. For the Celtics these places were very real - places within creation where we could physically go. The Thin Places in our own lives are those moments where the space between us & the Kingdom is thin, when we are introduced to a greater glimpse of Who He is through our experiences and through the stories of others.
