I’m Not Good at ‘Again’

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” - Albert Einstein
According to Einstein, I would have to say that I’m only partially insane. I find myself doing the same thing over and over again, but I don’t necessarily expect different results. Let’s call it a personal revelation, but I think I’m realizing more and more how I’m built - and it’s not to do the same things again and again.
Here’s what I’ve realized about myself…
I AM GOOD at discovering and understanding new things.
I AM NOT GOOD at existing in “the way things have always been done.”
I AM GOOD at helping other people understand and get started at new things.
I AM NOT GOOD at being simply a ‘worker bee’ - carrying out things that others could and probably should be doing themselves.
I AM GOOD at getting excited about a new project, new direction, or new change.
I AM NOT GOOD at staying with that new project, new direction, or new change for an extended length of time.
In other words, I AM GOOD at being a catalyst/equipper/teacher; I AM NOT GOOD at the routine/status quo/monotonous overtones that life and work can bring at times.
Case in point - I love my job at GiANT Impact. I get to work with incredible people and help them do incredible things. And because they hadn’t had anyone helping shape direction for technology and web, there is plenty of “newness” around me in regards to the variety of things to do.
I love my job. But I suspect I’ll love it even more six months from now, after I have hit my one year anniversary mark. The reason? Most of what I do on a day-to-day basis involves building capabilities and bringing things to a sustainable point that others, who are more passionate and qualified, can take leadership in web initiatives for the areas they are a part of - without the technology limitations that have existed, and still exist, at least in part.
Currently I…
- Fix things - Take what is old and broken, patch where necessary, and pull the plug where needed.
- Reshape things - Breath new life into things that are mediocre.
- Unbox mindsets - My goal: bring people to a point where when they begin dreaming they have no “we can’t do that” limitations.
- Adjust flow - Help things run smoother, stronger and faster. In my mind, there is most assuredly a better way of doing things (than even what I thought previously)
What I do a little, that I want to do a lot more… Create. The answer to the question, “What do you want to be doing 1, 3 or 5 years from now?” is “Something different, better and newer than what I’m doing today.” Not because I don’t love what I’m doing now. Because that’s who I am.

What Are Thin Places?
"Thin Places" are rich in Celtic tradition. They are the places in our lives where the divine and the natural worlds come so close together that we can catch a glimpse of God. For the Celtics these places were very real - places within creation where we could physically go. The Thin Places in our own lives are those moments where the space between us & the Kingdom is thin, when we are introduced to a greater glimpse of Who He is through our experiences and through the stories of others.
