My 35 List: 5 Things I Want to Do in the Next 5 Years
This post has been nearly a month in coming. When I turned 35 last month I thought it would be a good idea to come up with a list of things that I want to see happen in my life in the next five years, before I turn 40. I had some things already on my short list right off the bat, but it has taken a few weeks to round off the list.
Here are my five:
- Write a book - I’ve had this desire for quite awhile, but never felt like I had anything to say that would warrant a book. I do now (more on that later), so no time like the present.
- Have a written plan for my boys - Time is flying by and I don’t want to take it for granted. There are things that I’ve always wanted to instill into my boys as they grow to be men. I want to write those things down, develop a plan, and put purpose to my thoughts.
- Travel abroad - I went to New Zealand in college for three weeks as a part of a mission team. I vowed then that I would be back, or at the least place foreign travel as a part of my life. Andrea has never been overseas and I want to go with her at least one place in the next five years.
- See a shuttle launch - Another one of those ‘always wanted to do’ things. Been fascinated with space & the space program since I was a kid. I’m closer to the Kennedy Space Center than I may ever be. It’s time to take a trip with the fam & watch a shuttle launch live.
- Read an average of 16 books a year - Honestly, that’s probably not challenging enough, but I figured four books every three months is a pretty good clip. I’m reading more now than I ever have in my life and would love to set a goal out there to keep me on track.
What about you? What would be in your ‘bucket list’ if you made one? What are some things that you’ve always wanted to do, but never set out to do them? What are some things you could set as goals for yourself to see new things accomplished in your near future?

Great list Chris! I LOVE your blog design. Actually, I just showed Brad and he wants something cool like this. Who did this for you? Did you do it? It’s amazing!
To Do by 30:
1. Tour the nation, making sure to visit several key churches.
2. experience and learn more about House Church
3. via blogging, podcasting, help stir-up more conversation about church practice
4. Read more books - haven’t read anything in months!
5. Get married?
6. write a book
7. Create a helpful online service.

Love the feel of you site and your 35 list. Also curious to hear more on the book idea as that plays out now that you feel you have something to say. I would love to take the entire family on an overseas trip. Have had some ideas on where just not sure when we could afford it and when would be the right time for the boys to best experience something like that. Lisa and I haven’t been anywhere outside the US except Mexico so it would be an adventure for us as well. Started reading “Wide Awake” this week and would recommend it on your reading list if you haven’t already started reading it.

Hey Chris, that’s exciting to hear that you are wanting to write a book! I remember quite awhile back you mentioned something in a post about wanting to write & I’ve been meaning to email and encourage you to join a writers group in your area. I finally joined one in T-town (almost 2 years ago now) & it has been one of the best things I’ve done to grow and stay encouraged as a writer. The training offered through speakers, etc. is great & the support and camaraderie of fellowshipping with other writers is invaluable. Online writers groups are helpful too. I joined The Christian Writers View 2. I have a link for it and some other helpful writers sites listed on my blog. Keep me posted on your writing journey!

What Are Thin Places?
"Thin Places" are rich in Celtic tradition. They are the places in our lives where the divine and the natural worlds come so close together that we can catch a glimpse of God. For the Celtics these places were very real - places within creation where we could physically go. The Thin Places in our own lives are those moments where the space between us & the Kingdom is thin, when we are introduced to a greater glimpse of Who He is through our experiences and through the stories of others.
