I’m blowing the whistle on fairyland faith.
The only time I’ve experienced some kind of spiritual nirvana, walking around with a cheesy ‘holy’ grin, is when I was too young and naive at life to know better.
I’m not saying that we can’t experience times when we actually pass through a kind of ‘Thin Place,’ where the space between us & God feels incredibly thin and life seems to go on, not without pain or struggle, but with an air of confident faith. I’ve experienced those times on my journey.
I just don’t think we were meant to camp there. In fact, the harder we try to exist at that level, the more elusive it becomes.
No, I’m pulling the curtain away from the myth that the closer we get to God and the more we begin to resemble Jesus (a crude representation at best), the more we will live in peace, the more our paths will be straightened for us, and the more the birds will tweet around us as we walk merrily along in our faith journey.
God is God in the midst of the mess of our lives. That’s the beauty - not a spiritual pipe dream that few ever pretend to achieve.

What Are Thin Places?
"Thin Places" are rich in Celtic tradition. They are the places in our lives where the divine and the natural worlds come so close together that we can catch a glimpse of God. For the Celtics these places were very real - places within creation where we could physically go. The Thin Places in our own lives are those moments where the space between us & the Kingdom is thin, when we are introduced to a greater glimpse of Who He is through our experiences and through the stories of others.

Ha! I forgot about that clip! Here’s a song I wrote a few months ago that I think says what you’re saying. Similar sentiment.
When I fall down weak and weary
When I doubt who’s in control
When I’ve yelled and cussed at the top of my lungs
God can bring me home
Even if the flames are blazing
Even if streams overflow
Even if the dark night lingers
God can bring me home
